I was asked to create an original work of art to be displayed along with a performance of Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater. There is a certain point in that musical score when the undulating voice of the vocalist reminded me of fingers being raised as an expression of both suffering and surrender. That was the moment I chose to depict in the image. Mary stands with arms raised offering herself along with Jesus to the Father.
