Caroline Furlong

Head of Christ

Though no one knows for certain what Jesus looked like, this is a traditional portrayal of His face.  Color symbolism is also very traditional in iconography. Jesus’ red inner garment symbolizes His humanity and his blue outer garment, His divinity. The Greek inscription at the top of the icon is the traditional abbreviation for “Jesus Christ, Son of God”  and the inscription in his halo stands for the Greek words “The One Who Is,” similar to “I Am that I Am,” God’s statement to Moses at the burning bush.

Furlong, Caroline. Head of Christ. Egg tempera on traditional wood icon board, 23k gold leaf. 12”x9.5”. USD $1150.
